and beef would be transported into the slaughterhouses of the Windy City, to be sliced, diced and processed However, in Erik Larsons
book, "Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America," the main theme centers around Chicago as a "White City," in other words, the
Worlds Fair of 1893. Though the book itself deals with a murder, among other things, it also tells the story of head
architect Daniel Burnhams daunting task of building a barren part of Chicago, dubbed "Black City" because it was little more than dirt, weeds, and abandoned buildings, into the site of
the Worlds Fair. To help him in his quest, Burnham relied on help from famous builders and architects, bringing them all together to create a fascinating and interesting fair that
introduced such items as the Ferris wheel, Juicy Fruit Gum (introduced by the Wrigley Family, which ran its gum and candy company in Chicago) and Cracker Jack.
Though the Fair itself was definitely a source of economic growth for Chicago, turning it from its vision as a "frontier town" into a vibrant
city, the products introduced at the fair, mentioned above, became powerhouse economic generators as well. Speaking of generators, Larsons account of the
