area veterans is somewhat limited. We do, however, have access to information about veterans in the state of Illinois, as well as nationally. Also available are some statistics from health
centers such as VA Hines Hospital. Well piece together information from these and come to some conclusions. In terms of how vets
in the Chicago area feel about societal integration, for the most part, they seem to have integrated fairly well (there are those who continue to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress
Syndrome and homelessness; well discuss these in some detail later on). (Veterans Administration, 2003). According to statistics offered by the VA, the
organization spent more than $1.6 billion in Illinois during 2002, offering services and benefits to 945,487 veterans who live in the state (with the majority of those based in and
around the Chicago area) (Veterans Administration, 2003). During 2002, 179,987 people received health care in the states VA facilities; 79,487 Illinois veterans and survivors collected disability compensation or pension
payments (Veterans Administration, 2003). Furthermore, at least 15,700 veterans and their families used GI Bill payments for their education, 62,835 owned homes purchased with GI Bill home loan guarantees
and 3,190 were interred in Illinois seven national cemeteries (Veterans Administration, 2003). This, of course is a small percentage of the overall population that seems to have "integrated," but this
doesnt necessarily mean that the remainder have not (Veterans Administration, 2003). Other statistics are also interesting: for one thing, more than 50
percent of VA Chicago Health Care Systems veteran population is 65 years or older, meaning the need for geriatric services continues to grow (Veterans Administration, 2003).
