is it that is so pervasive, nonspecific to age, gender or race? Cheating. As with most things it can be said to all boil down to perspective. What is it
that makes a student feel compelled to cheat on an exam, or a businessman decide to deduct questionable expenses from their reports accounting statements? When considering the whole psychology of
why people cheat it is necessary, one might think, to get to the grassroots of the problem. Firstly, there is the difficulty in the definition of right and wrong. If
an instructor or an employer does not specifically state what constitutes cheating or wrongful behavior, is the employee or student responsible for committing it. In 1999 U.S. News and World
Report ran several articles which documented how pervasive cheating was. What was more disturbing than the actual statistics was the prevailing attitude of those who were caught cheating. But, it
can be considered, that from another perspective, the people who cheated were encouraged to do so. How? Unrealistic demands call for unusual and out of the ordinary behaviors, it can
be said. When the administration or management are so out of touch with what their teams are capable of, then they set vastly unreachable goals for their workers. Therefore, employees
cheat. They cheat with timesheets, for example, as well as cheat on financial statements which might include a deduction for a business lunch, in which business was only peripherally discussed.
This type of cheating is indicative, it can be said, of a misperception of the persons in authority and their perceived place in the scheme of things in the corporate
