a group of disparate personalities on a pilgrimage. If one read the book for only the tales of the pilgrims, then it would also be enjoyable reading, but there is
so much more to Chaucers tales than that. Nearly all of his characters reveal some aspect of the human condition and of life and attitudes in Medieval England. (thesis)The Prioress
Tale, for example is one such tale which shows the conflicting relationship between the Prioress character and the image which she portrays to the world. The Prioress character is
an interesting one because one is never certain if what she relays comes from her own beliefs or if she is spouting the rhetoric of the church. She is a
nun, but many of her insinuations are anything but saintly. In fact, the tale she weaves is an old recounting of a tale that they had all heard before, but
what makes this ironic is that is full of blood, violence and horror. This is all a stark contrast to her outward appearance. In fact, by the description given,
Madame Egulantyne, though dressed as a nun, wearing the Habit, is said to be quite fashionable, wearing her religious symbols as if they were jewelry rather than sacred objects. Also,
Chaucer mentions that her forehead is showing, which is often considered to be a characteristic of a person who was well bred and of the aristocracy. Perhaps what Chaucer is
alluding to is that the Madame has entered the service of the Lord, either not of her own accord, or has joined in an attempt to flee some persecution. During
