There are as many different texts as there are readers when it comes to the works of David Lodge and Arthur Miller, but all will agree, that it is the characters which make both of their plays: Death of a Salesman and Nice Work successful. A writer may use symbolism to describe a characters development through a story. This universal truth gives the reader an immediate kinship with the character and gives the reader intimate details from which they can draw from their own experiences and therefore apply them to the character. Another element that an author uses in his/her construction of a character is a sketch. Most authors begin with the obvious things first, such as appearance and a name. Sometimes, the name and the appearance can be significant, and sometimes they are just what is suggested to the author when she pictures the character in her head. Also evident is the authors moral tone or statement of the events that are occurring in the work. If the author is very good, this statement will arise from the reader or audiences own inference from what he/she has read, or one of the characters will begin to exhibit the theme. Everyone wants to be liked, to be popular. It can be said to be part of the human condition. But, it can also be said, that Willy Loman, the sixty something traveling salesman hero from Millers play, wants this to the exclusion of reality.
