a teacher, goes to the Rochester house as governess, then falls in love with the master of that house. As the story continues, however, we find that Edward Rochester himself
has some deep, dark secrets and when Jane finds them out, she flees from him in horror. The question we raise in this paper now is, is Jane Eyre a
noble heroine who has tried to do the right thing in the face of some interesting situations? Or is she simply a prudish individual, someone who is so unbelievably sheltered
that she cant stand up to much of anything or anyone? Jane, on the one hand, shows some interesting fortitude, despite her
upbringing. She is grave, quiet, yet very intelligent and learned. She also could be considered "goodness personified," in that despite everything that happens to her, she isnt vengeful or wicked,
but rather a victim of her circumstances (but she manages to overcome those circumstances, quite well, or so Charlotte Bronte would like us to believe).
Though Jane is not a beauty, she seems content with the situation in which shes in. She focuses on her learning and intelligence, rather than simply trying
to use looks as an anchor. The other thing that Jane is not is greedy. When Edward offers her all kinds of clothes and jewels, she refuses to take them,
pointing out that she simply isnt capable or able to wear them. In short, she presents herself as someone who is quiet, staid and very capable of accomplishments.
