tale come some very basic human truths and themes, which oddly enough, still apply to the human condition today. The epic story of Gilgamesh is easily one of the oldest
surviving pieces of literature and as such offers great insight into the psychological development of the hero. As the poem begins Gilgamesh has become the incomparable leader of the
people of Uruk. He is bold, brash, and conceited. His triumphs have only served to inflate his ego to the point that he has lost touch with his own humanity
and as a result has become a tyrant. In their desperation the people in the kingdom call out to the gods for help. The gods hear the peoples cries and
as a result Enkindu is created. In many respects, one could state that both characters are two sides of the same heroic coin. And, as such, both progress psychologically
throughout the tale. Both Enkidu and Gilgamesh at the beginning of the tale are carnal beings, living only for themselves, enjoying physical pleasures and employing little wisdom or knowledge. When
Enkidu is created by the gods he is placed in the woods to roam wild and free as he chooses. He is rumored to have extraordinary strength. However, the gods
have plans for Enkidu and so a Priestess tames Enkidu and convinces him to go with her to meet Gilgamesh in Uruk. Though Enkidu has lost his strength because of
his alliance with the Priestess, he has gained knowledge. This knowledge he continues to grow as he lives for a while with some shepherds who teach him the ways of
civilized man. Gilgamesh is also developing a base of knowledge. Now, both characters have come to the point where they cannot survive without developing knowledge. Gilgameshs knowledge comes in
