Saint Marie, a young girls discovery of her own self truth is contrasted with the perception of the faith of one nun who lives in the towns convent. Together, Sister
Leopolda and Marie make similar journeys, with conclusions all their own. Marie is a young Native American girl whose dreams and aspirations seem thwarted by her oppressive and impoverished life
on the reservation. She is fascinated by her teacher at the Catholic school, named Sister Leopolda. Most of the nuns choose to ignore the heritage and ways of the Native
Americans, except for Sister Leopolda. It is her discussions about Satan that intrigue Marie the most because they closely resemble the stories that Maries grandmother tells about the evil spirits.
Marie wants above all else to be somebody, to be respected, and to have power. She believes that she can achieve this by becoming a nun such as Sister Leopolda.
The Sister is her teacher on the reservation, but there is no compassion in her. She is cold, calculating and she runs her classroom like a military boot camp. Her
idea of discipline is to lock children in dark closets. And, of course, this is just what she does on at least one occasion, to Marie. Marie quickly realizes
that this woman has a great power over her and over the rest of the class. She begins to look around her at the reservation and realizes that there are
not that many alternatives for her to gain the type of power that she craves. She daydreams about becoming a saint and being worshipped by those who have caused her
such pain in her life, namely Sister Leopolda. Marie is successful in her quest, though it does not end up as she had originally anticipated. She had hoped to work
