in the insurance industry. When someone calls in to report a claim, its great when the customers service representatives can have that information with just a few keystrokes or mouse
clicks. Which is why those in the insurance industry tend to get so disconcerted when management comes along and decides to make
a change to the IT infrastructure. What invariably ends up happening is that the change causes all sorts of complications while increasing downtime, and the end users find themselves having
to learn a totally new system without much support. Furthermore, when they call IT with a question, theyre brushed off. And adding insult to injury is that the systems are
more difficult to manage than the original systems were. So what ends up happening is productivity slows, resentment builds, and management scraps the entire thing, writing off losses of thousands
of dollars, while blaming IT for not coming up with the right fit. Everyone loses. The good news is that such changes
dont have to be quite so dramatic, nor do they need to end negatively. A little forethought on the part of management can help get the implementation done quickly and
do what it is supposed to do - save money and improve efficiency. The Difficulty of Change/IT Paul Englebert (2007) points out
in his white paper on keys to IAM implementation that identity and access management is necessary for any sound security program - but its also a difficult thing to implement.
