Haw) and their lives in the Maze. As most people know who have read the book, the main thrust of this writing is how various beings react to change -
do they prepare for it? Do they move reactively to it? Do they just sit around and mope? In this paper, well examine preparation for change - and preparation for
change in an organization. One major change that most people face at one time or another is leaving home for the
first time - either to go to college, to get married or simply to move out on ones own. Leaving home and parents can be traumatic - and most people,
for the most part, are unprepared for it. For the sake of this paper, lets take the person who is totally unprepared for that momentous event - leaving home.
In this regard, the person would resemble Hem. Why is this? Hem knows something has happened - in the book his cheese is
missing. Yet instead of going after more cheese (as his buddy Haw has done), Hem decides hes going to stay and complain and hope the cheese comes back on its
own. This is pretty much how most young people approach leaving home. They know its going to happen, but they dont prepare, assuming its all going to be easy.
But it isnt. There are the physical aspects of course - the packing, the deciding what to take (and even more painfully, what
to leave behind). Then there are the emotional aspects that most people are even less prepared namely the leaving of old friends (and yes, parents), and being forced
