In order to assess the
relative merits of cognitive behavioural therapy as compared to other forms of therapy in the treatment of panic disorders, it is useful to consider the causes and symptoms of panic
attacks and the ways in which CBT can be used to alleviate these. It is also helpful to look at the specific ways in which CBT, rather than other treatments,
can be seen as the most useful form of treatment both from the point of view of a high success rate, and of a low rate of relapse, in comparison
to other options. Panic attacks
can arise without any apparent reason, and there is no warning that an attack is about to occur. The symptoms usually involve increased heartbeat, respiratory difficulties, dizziness and nausea and
a feeling of overwhelming fear. This fear is out of proportion to the situation which the individual happens to be in, which may from a rational point of view be
completely harmless. In many ways a panic attack is reminiscent of the fight-or-flight response which arises in frightening situations, with the salient difference that a panic attack is not triggered
by anything which can be identified as genuinely frightening and therefore deserving of such a response.
