as Mai does in Caos book. Having a reversal of roles, Mai is, in fact, raising her mother to take her place in society, rather than the other way around.
Thesis: As such, this book may be analyzed for a great deal many themes between mothers and daughters as they attempt to cope with each other and the world around
them. The Cause and Effect of a mother/daughter relationship is compounded by the mothers reluctance to embrace any element of the American culture in which she finds herself. From the
beginning it becomes apparent that the mothers inability to assimilate to American culture will have a lasting effect on her daughter, who must interpret and live in two vastly competing
cultures and times. As Lan writes, Mai is pulled between the American dream and the.. "Vietnamese version of the American Dream; a new spin, the Vietnam spin, to the old
immigrant faith in the future"(Cao 40). The Vietnamese version of the American Dream, however, is not one that Mai readily embraces. It is forced on her by her culture and
her mothers wishes for her. She feels torn by this and as a result, this causes her to make decisions against her parents and her culture, rather than making decisions
based on actual wants or desires. The effect of this societal pressure causes her to refuse help and support which might otherwise have been there for her in some situations.
Secondly, Mais mother is constantly trying to escape her memories of the Vietnam War, while Mai is trying to escape from the terrors of the old culture. Both women
are trying to escape, but in their attempts both cause the other a great deal of pain. The Mother is running away and conversely Mai is running toward separate destinies.
