First, it would be helpful to examine both Castells theories and those of globalization. Globalization, in its most basic sense, involves the dropping of borders of countries and nations when it comes to the flow of goods, services and capital across borders. Globalization means that tariffs are dropped to almost nothing (as are restrictions, taxes and other import/export barriers), allowing a continuous free-flow of everything good from nation to nation, with little impediment. Meanwhile, Castells focuses on what he calls a so-called contemporary "network society" (Taylor, 2000). In such a society, he notes, there is a "space of flow," and a "space of places" (Taylor, 2000). Before 1970, goes his theory, society tended to be more territorial, in which agriculture, industry and other services were based in local and national economies (Taylor, 2000). This would have been considered more "industrial" (though agrarian and service economies were certainly included here), and the flow of goods and services was predominantly local, and sometimes regional. However, when the "information age" arrived, along with the knowledge economy, we began seeing a shift in the situation. Because of communications and computers, transnational projects and marketing came about (Taylor, 2000). The final result of this has been Castells service economy model, or global place of flows, in which success is based on access to information, rather than the production and sale of goods and services (Taylor, 2000).
