Valeria Solis-Alaniz is a 12-year-old Hispanic female, referred to us in response to shoplifting activities at the local mall with her friends. Her background demonstrates potential at-risk potential as
follows. * A disrespect for authority. This is characterized by Valerias tendency to back to her teachers and her mother, Karen. * A clear need for attention. This is characterized
by constantly interrupting in class and a refusal to sit at her desk in the classroom. That need for attention seems to carry over to her attire. She has a
belly ring and wears "skinny" jeans to school. Shoplifting also demonstrates a need for attention. Though the attention that such an activity brings is negative attention, in the mind of
a rebellious adolescent, negative attention from an adult figure is better than no attention. * A single mother and three siblings. A great deal of research has been done on
youth from single-mother homes and the results are more or less the same: Youth tend to be at "increased risk for a range of adjustment difficulties" (Shook et al, 2010;
p. 243). Generally, better success outcomes in single-parent homes come from those parents relationships with non-marital co-parents (such as a grandparent or other relative). There is no indication, however, that
Valeria has access to an older mentor or parent-type figure. Valeria also is in conflict with her other siblings for her mothers already attention.
Valeria is also very unhappy when discussing her life and her problems. She disdains education - this is proven by the fact shes been held back in school. She
