dieting to the point that she loses too much weight, restricts her eating, or both (Facts on Anorexia Nervosa, 2002). The result is that the individual becomes a compulsive dieter
and exerciser, binges and purges relentlessly (known as bulimia) and is manic about any kind of weight gain. Whenever the individual with anorexia looks in the mirror, she sees a
fat body - even if that body is dangerously underweight. The medical community points out that anorexia is a "psychiatric disorder with significant
levels of chronicity . . .," carrying with it one of the highest reported mortality rates (Maguire et al, 2008; 3). Psychologically, anorexia is characterized psychologically by a drive for
thinness, leading to a fear of not only weight gain, but even of being a normal weight (Maguire et al, 2008). In addition
to malnutrition, there are a variety of physical complications of this problem, such as hair loss, delayed puberty, dry skin and bruises, a drop in hormone levels, permanent bone loss,
mood changes, sensitivity to cold and insomnia (Facts on Anorexia Nervosa, 2002). Telling the young adolescent teenage girl to snap out of it, to stop dieting or to be realistic
doesnt do any good. When it comes to anorexia nervosa, these young women have a passionate fear of weight gain and poor body image problems.
Though people of all ages and both genders experience anorexia, the focus of this paper will be young teens, girls between the ages of 13 years old
and 16 years old. Its believed that intervention strategies among this age group can help ensure they reach adulthood being able to handle body image problems or eating disorder problems.
