However, according to Carl Jungs philosophies about the nature of the human psyche, what is happening every four years, is that the American public is utilizing a type of psychological labeling to determine which candidate is their favorite. Carl Jungs insights into the political process offer the average voter a glimpse into their decisions about their leaders. Carl Jung identified four basic psychological functions: feeling, intuition, sensing, and thinking(Campbell 1976). Quite simply, human beings use these four functions at any given time on any given day or hour to make decisions about a host of events, people, places and things. They can occur simultaneously, singly, or in combinations. In fact, if one does enough serious study into these functions, one can see the basic roots of the Myers-Briggs tests as well as other personality based evaluative tests. Thus the functions are well recognized and validated, accepted by the research community(Pettifour 2004). What is interesting to note, however, is that Jung states that these functions are only employed by the individual. Group dynamics change the ability and perception of the individual and thus these functions may not engage themselves in quite the same way. Most people believe, if they were to be asked in random fashion off the street, that their decisions about the candidates is based on personal ideologies both of themselves and the candidates. However, to place it is psychological terms, it may be more of a decision between two varying psychological types.
