advancement and training to improve skills. Career planning, in its most basic form, involves assessment of personal strengths and aspirations, developing and
establishing goals and objectives, and then understanding the steps necessary to reach those goals and objectives (Working Out a Career Plan, 2005). The career plan helps an employee understand his/her
self (as well as the skills and attributes he/she can bring to the job) (Working Out a Career Plan, 2005). Such a plan also offers monitoring (providing metrics to measure
the steps to help gauge progress) and clarity (so when opportunities come up, employees can make informed choices) (Working Out a Career Plan, 2005).
But any career plan for employees needs to be aligned to the goals of a particular organization. If, for example, an employee has a goal to head
up the canning division, but that division is downsizing (or is going away), that wouldnt be aligning a goal with an organizational objective. So understanding the organizations mission and how
the employee fits into that mission is the first step. Step two involves determining how to measure performance. Performance appraisal methods in
most workplaces arent effective - for this plan, the performance appraisal should take place frequently (at least monthly), and should be more in the format of a talk, rather than
