Based in Japan (with three subsidiaries worldwide), Canon means many things to many people. To the PC user, Canon means printers, color
and otherwise. To the photography enthusiast, camera means digital cameras. And to those to regularly tally up numbers, Canon at one time meant calculators (back during the 1970s, the Canon
P10-D, which is the size of a small adding machine these days, was the first "portable" calculator that offered both an LED AND paper readout). And to those who regularly
make copies at the office, Canon is the manufacturer of plain paper copying machines (Reuters, 2004). Launched in 1937, Canon markets
and sells its products primarily under the Canon brand name both directly and through sales subsidiaries (Reuters, 2004). During 2002, approximately 73 percent of consolidated net sales took place outside
Japan, with about 34 percent generated in the Americas, 29 percent in Europe and 10 percent in other areas (Reuters, 2004). Products from this company are divided into three groups:
business machines, cameras and optical and other products (Reuters, 2004). Meanwhile, Canons business machines product group is divided into three sub-groups: copying machines, computer peripherals and business systems (Reuters, 2004).
Canon, in other words, has its fingers in many pies. In January 2003, Canon Aptex, Inc. and Copyer Co. Ltd. which was
two of the companys manufacturing subsidiaries in Japan, merged into Canon Finetech, Inc. to further strengthen the core competencies of the two merged companies to better impact office equipment and
