is also working around this issue much like other corporations are - with the typical performance appraisal. The typical performance appraisal takes place
every six months or one year. In the days leading up to the dreaded confrontation (which is how most employees and managers regard this), employees literally become sick. They dont
know whats lurking for them in that appraisal. Will it be positive? Or will the appraisal dredge up every stupid mistake made during the past year?
Then, once the employee is in the managers office, and the manager has finished with his or her five minute appraisal (judged mainly by rated scales
that have little to do with the employees work), the employee escapes with relief, feeling as though he or she had just escaped a brush with death.
If this seems overly dramatic, its not. The business literature is filled with examples similar to CanGos scenarios - petrified employees, uncomfortable managers, and frustrated senior
managers who dont know what to do. CanGo is on the right path wanting to do something with its appraisal system. The problem
is, this company is placing too much reliance on aone-size-fits-all type of appraisal, with the appraisal form being the foundation on which this company basis its employee evaluations. Discussion
