of system can work in the U.S. The answer is, of course, it depends on who you talk with. But despite the obvious flaws in the Canadian system, transporting that
type of system to the United States would be beneficial. For one thing, its free to citizens -- a Canadian citizen can walk into a hospital for an emergency and
walk out without having to wonder, "will my insurance cover this procedure?" The answer, always, is yes. To prove this point, lets take a
look at the criticisms leveled against the Canadian system and compare them to what the U.S. is experiencing. The largest problem with the Canadian
system, according to its critics, is that the wait is excessively long. An article written by Beth Duff-Brown in March 2005 for the Associated Press told the story of a
teenage girl who was told she would have to wait up to three years for surgery to repair a torn knee ligament (Duff-Brown, 2005). In the end, the family decided
to pay more than $3,000 for arthroscopic surgery at a private clinic, and the government didnt help (Duff-Brown, 2005). The mother lamented that though Canadian citizens have to pay for
health insurance through the government, "when we go to access it, its just not there" (Duff-Brown, 2005). But what about this young ladys counterpart
in the United States? Granted, the wait would not be up to three years, but it would be awhile, likely a few weeks, depending on the surgeons schedule. And, assuming
the young lady is from a middle-class family, which is covered by some kind of employee-sponsored health insurance, once deductibles are satisfied and co-pays kicked into the system (not to
