describe their characters relationships with the universe, God and each other. In short, both authors embrace the philosophical school known as existentialism, in which an individual describes a relationship with
an exterior force. This paper will examine how both authors define existentialism through the stories "The Guest" and "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place."
"The Guest" is Camus short story that takes place in war-torn Algeria during the early 20th century. The story centers around a French school teacher, Daru, and about his
chance meeting with a native Arab who is accused of committing murder. The alleged murderer - the prisoner - is brought to the village in which Daru teaches by a
gendarme, Balducci, and Daru is requested to keep an eye on the prisoner until the proper authorities can arrest him. During the brief time that Daru and the prisoner are
with one another, they end up ultimately understanding and responding to the mores of each different culture, even though the decisions made in that understanding could result in death or
imprisonment. On the surface, the Arab prisoner in "The Guest" has been typically treated by many critics as "a primitive, brutalized, some
what dull or even dim-witted character," as from the start, he is passive and seemingly uncaring (Griem 95). It is clear that he committed a murder but he doesnt come
out and explain why, simply responding that the victim was running away from him (Griem 95). Although Daru is left with Balduccis explanation that a family squabble precipitated the murder,
there is vast uncertainty with this explanation, particularly from Darus Westernized view (Griem 95). Why would one family member kill another over an argument over grain?
