about the validity and reliability of the assessment across populations, the CAGE Questionnaire is one of the most commonly used initial assessments for alcohol dependency. The name CAGE is
an acronym for the themes of each of the four questions: (C)utting down on drinking; (A)nnoyed by others criticisms of drinking; (G)uilty about drinking; drinking in the morning as
an (E)ye-opener (Ewing, 1984). If a person responds positively to two or more of these questions, that person is believed to be at risk of alcohol abuse or alcoholism
(Ewing, 1984). The benefits of the CAGE questionnaire include the fact that it is a simple, self-test that only incorporates the following four yes-or-no questions:
1. Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking? 2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking? 3. Have you ever felt bad or
guilty about your drinking? 4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover (eye-opener)? (Ewing, 1984).
The questionnaire can be used in a written form or in web-based programming, which allows for the quick scoring of the test and allows individuals to see the outcomes of
their test in correlation with the scale of responses. The basic belief is that individuals who respond yes 1 time do not have a statistically significant chance of an
