the company and the customer (Alexander, 2009). Products pass through a number of steps or activities and gains value with each of those steps in the process (Alexander, 2009). There
is a cost associated with each of these steps or activities in the process although the cost is not generally the same, i.e., some activities may cost very little and
others may cost a great deal (Alexander, 2009). Value is not necessarily equated with cost. By that I mean that a low cost activity could add more value to the
product than a high cost activity. Ideally, the value of the finished product will be greater than the cost of creating value (Alexander, 2009). These steps or activities were
relatively simple when a company was able to complete each of the steps and purchase the different supplies and materials needed domestically. The globalization of the market has made this
process far more complex and complicated. Alexander (2009) points out that the value chain itself has expanded since the 1980s. It now incorporates inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and
service (Alexander, 2009). This expands the number of areas in which the company can add value and also opportunities for the company to gain a competitive advantage (Alexander, 2009). Globalization
has added another dimension to the process in that companies are now transporting materials and products across geographic borders. The global value chain also brings with it problems. One
is quality and one is security. Both are essential to the value chain. The challenge for standardizing quality led to the adoption of IS0 9000. ISO is the International Organization
