present. One cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad (Lewis, 2010). In this insightful comment, Lewis is referring to the necessity of change. Sometimes, it does seem hard to change, but as Lewis indicates, change is often necessary in order for people to grow and achieve. It may seem comforting to remain an "egg," that is, secure in the known and the familiar. But, as Lewis indicates, to remain forever an egg is ultimately detrimental to the human psyche. We "spoil" just as much as an egg would that is never hatched. One of the main tenets of psychologist Carl Rogers approach to therapeutic counseling is that everyone has within them an innate drive towards "self-actualization and maturity," which results in them gaining a "greater degree of internal comfort" (Kirschenbaum, 2004, p. 116). In other words, Rogers believed that each individual has within them the ability, which is sometimes "latent if not evident," to understand the elements in life that are causing them pain, as well as the ability to overcome these causes (Kirschenbaum, 2004, p. 116). It is the this urge that pushes people towards growth and self-actualization that Lewis is referring to when he indicates that we must "hatch" and learn to fly. This may mean leaving the safety and security of home to go to college and begin life as an independent adult. It can mean that an adult takes on the challenge of going back to school and training for a new career. It means taking on new challenges, or it can mean addressing old problems.
