It is the story of an African American woman who finds herself essentially having very little choices in her life, going from one man or husband to another until she finds a sense of peace and identity. It is a fascinating story of one womans journey, a relatively simple journey, and a journey that often involves nature and the significance of nature as it relates to understanding life. The following paper examines the symbolic nature of buzzards seen in Hurstons novel. Buzzards There are three references to buzzards in Hurstons work. Two direct references come when she is married to Joe and they live in the town he all but owns. The last reference comes when she is in a good place with another man, a good personal place, and the love of her life Tea Cake. The fact that we see the buzzards in these two periods in her life indicates that they can clearly be related to a particular turning point in her life of some sorts. In relationship to her marriage to Joe we note he is a very demanding and oppressive husband who does not like others to see that Janie is beautiful or intelligent. She is made to remain aloof from all people in this relationship. The buzzards at this point could well be related to her own internal decay, being eaten alive through the restrictions. When we see the buzzards, while she is married to Joe, it is due to the death of a mule. This mule is symbolic, to Janie, in relationship to the fact that her husband saw him being abused and when Janie seemed upset at this he purchased the mule, setting it free like a slave in ...
