10 x 8 and 28 x 16 feet. Carpet Needed The rooms are measured in feet, but carpet is sold by the square
yard. With their measurements of 12 x 9, 10 x 8 and 28 x 16 feet, the rooms will require 108 ft2 + 80 ft2 + 448 ft2 of
carpet to cover the floor, for a total of 636 square feet. There are 3 feet in a yard; a square yard equals 3 x 3 = 9 square
feet. Dividing 636 ft2 by 9 ft2 = 70.67 square yards of carpet needed only to cover the floor. Carpet is available
in several widths; the 12 foot width is the most common. Measuring and buying for the 12 x 9 room is straightforward in that a single 12 x 9
cut will carpet the room. Covering the 10 x 8 floor provides a cut 4 feet wide (12 - 8) and 10 feet long that can be used in
the 28 x 16 room. For that room, it will be necessary to purchase a 12 wide piece of carpet that is 28 long as well as an additional
