is valuable to consider specific points from the film to defend the assertion that Butch Cassidy is indeed a representative film of postmodern cinema.
The first element outlined by Belton is genre pastiche, and Butch Cassidy clearly demonstrates genre pastiche in the development of the film. The film initially takes on a
kind of western air, shaping the actions of the characters through traditional modes inherent in westerns. Specifically, the points of view, the characters modes of expression and the setting,
all support the conceptual view of the western. At the same time, the filmmaker also brings in elements drama, adventure and comedy, all of which shift the perspective within the
film and drive the viewer to reconsider the initial assessment of the film as representative of the western genre. As a result, this kind of construction, one based on
number of different stylistic elements and a lack of authority or attachment to any single genre, appears to maintain the film as representative of genre pastiche.
For example, the film focuses away from the traditional violence of the western film and the identification of the main characters as stereotypical western outlaws, and
instead brings comic identities to the two central characters. Their likeable nature transforms the western genre to one of a comedy, though the comic perspective is not maintained throughout.
