The Ford – Firestone fiasco began in earnest during the summer of 2000, the point at which neither company could continue to ignore the mounting problems with the combination of the Ford Explorer and Firestone tires. Neither company gave inordinate attention to the problems until forced to by consumer pressure aided by one particular lawsuit. Reports of accident deaths and simultaneous finger-pointing by Ford and Firestone began surfacing with regularity in late summer 2000. The observed problem was that Ford Explorers,
Fords top-selling vehicle, were involved in an extraordinarily high number of incidents in which their Firestone tires failed through tread separation. The incidents were concentrated in hot-weather areas of
the US and other nations, indicating more problems with tires than with the vehicles, but Firestone publicly stated the fault is that of Fords suspension system.
There are growing numbers of facts known in the case, but the issue only came to light after a series of lawsuits naming the two companies as
being responsible for the growing number of deaths and injury resulting from the failures, whatever their cause. The pattern that emerged was that the tread failed on factory-installed Firestone
tires, the Ford Explorer fliped over and death and injury resulted. Each company made public only the information it felt required to disclose while the issue was in litigation
and the stakes were highest. Firestone instituted a voluntary recall of 6.5 million tires but worked feverishly to ensure that Ford shared financial responsibility in the end.
