De-industrialisation is the decline of the industrial society, on whatever level is appropriate. On a national scale, it can be related to the natural progression of
the course of national economies. This is the rise of industrialization that engenders rapid economic growth. It is followed by decline in industrial pursuits, which are replaced by
increasing interest in services. De-industrialisation involves significant change, of course, which at times can be traumatic for individuals. In the United States,
as example, former textile workers were beginning to be displaced by the decade of the 1980s as manufacturers looked to offshore sources for cheaper goods with which to manufacture their
own products. Formerly, fibers were grown or manufactured in the US; those fibers were woven into fabrics according to the specifications of US designers; those fabrics were used to
create clothing and other textile items used in American households. The trend already had been away from textile manufacturing in the US before
the advent of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Following implementation of NAFTA, many of the textile manufacturing jobs that had been located in the US moved to
Mexico; many others moved to Asian contract manufacturers. For its part, the US focused on the growth of services rather than being overly concerned about the decline of industrialization.
Singapore and Japan provide two other examples of the movement toward services in the post-industrial economy. 2. Identify the main features of the "knowledge-based" enterprise.
