authority, but generally this is only because the rules that have been imposed on them in the past are ones that they viewed as arbitrary or unfair. We actually follow
rules every day that all of us take for granted, but which, because we follow them, drastically improve our lives. For example: stopping at red lights, driving in the correct
lane, or agreeing to settle our disputes in courtrooms rather than gunfights in the street. When we talk about business rules, we mean these latter types of rules; rules that
support the fundamental architecture of a complex system, like a business, and help it to run smoothly and efficiently. The appropriate application of business rules has served us well at
