Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction The relationship between business and the environment is subject to a great deal of debate. On one hand, business people claim that obeying all the regulations can be onerous, and may eventually force them to make cuts or cease operations entirely, a persuasive argument in a weak economy. On the other hand, environmentalists point out that natural resources are finite, not infinite, and we must care for them if we are to thrive and leave a legacy for the future. This paper considers the relationship between environmental regulations and business, and the impact of business on the environment. Discussion The obvious example of a horrific environmental impact is the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It is so vast and so damaging that its full effects will probably not be known for years. Well come back to BP later in the paper. But first, what about environmental regulations in general? Alan Rugman and Alain Verbeke address precisely this in an essay entitled "Corporate Strategies and Environmental Regulations." The authors notes that people all over the world have become concerned with the impact of business activities on the environment, and that in response to this concern, governments everywhere have increased their environmental regulations. There are five levels of regulation: "multilateral (e.g., GATT/WTO), regional (e.g., EU/NAFTA), national, subnational and municipal" (Rugman and Verbeke 301).
