Summary One business coach notes that "Its ironic that some people are more afraid of public speaking than of driving on the highways. Yet, vastly more casualties and fatalities result from traffic accidents than from public speaking" (Pearson, n.d.). Because "the most successful business leaders are the ones who know how to motivate others using concise, clear and persuasive communication, the youth of today need to know how to speak to the corporate executives of tomorrow." Speak Up! is an afterschool program of 12 sessions intended for students ages 12 - 15. Building public speaking skills is the focus and goal of the program, but it is designed for and conveys other positive benefits as well. Among these are: * Greater self-confidence * Effective listening skills * Knowledge of how to "conduct meetings, follow agendas and set procedures" Initially Speak Up! groups will meet after school on school grounds; future plans envision extending Speak Up! into the community to meet at venues such as the YMCA, area churches and the public library. Program costs are minimal and are incurred only for facilitator salary and materials costs.
