referred to as a categorical imperative. Under this model, actions are right or wrong, or black or white. Social Contract Theory is another ethical model and is
also appropriate to this discussion. In The Social Contract, Rousseau (1968) states that it is the basis for all rights. In other words, man is not born with a particular
set of rights. Rather, man extracts rights from the social contract-even if it is not an official document-as opposed gleaning rights by virtue of birth (Rousseau, 1968). For Rousseau (1968),
the whole of society is more important than any one individual. It is the social contract that dictates morality and how man should behave. George (2008) notes: "Governmental respect for
individual freedom and the autonomy of nongovernmental spheres of authority is, then, a requirement of political morality" (p. 22). When it comes to ethical theory, utilitarianism and deontology often enter
the picture. Mill (2001) for example, who is a utilitarian, claims that happiness can be measured. In respect to ethics, decisions are made to create what is constructed as the
greatest happiness for the greatest number. It is sometimes the case that such an idea is not very practical. Sussman (2005) claims that there are many cases where the theory
cannot be applied. Rachels (1999) argues that pleasing the general population cannot translate to sound ethical theory. However, utilitarianism is simplistic and may be useful. It is a model
