the difficulty arises in the way that some cures or treatments are discovered and developed. One area of research that offers a high level of potential is stem cell research,
offering potential for a broad variety of condition, from spinal injuries and conditions such as Parkinsons through to diabetes. For an individual that is suffering from type II diabetes it
may be difficult to determine which is the ethical stance to take. To consider the issues we first need to look at why these are such a rich potential source
of discovery and why they are so controversial. The value of stem cells for medical research comes from the organ of the
cells. Stem cells are a very special kind of cell. The discovery of stem cells took place more than twenty years ago first discovered in mice (NIH, 2004). These
cells were isolated in humans in 1998 and research started form that date. It is the unique characteristics of the cells that give them so much potential; They are unspecialised
cells which have the ability to renew themselves over long periods of time; They are also able to become any number of cells under specific condition, hence their presence in
embryos and foetuses, they develop into whatever cells are required for the development of the organism (NIH, 2004). Thus stems cells may develop into insulin producing blood cells, heart muscle
cells or any of a range of other cells. Research has also fund the development into particular can also be induced (NIH, 2004). These cells appear to be the miracle
cells that have the potential to replace lost or damaged cells and create a number of treatments or cures. The problem is the source of the stem cells. The main
