popular entertainment to business interactions. The dissemination of a wide variety of information and the ways in which it is interpreted and used has relied on the remarkable technological advances
that have taken place in communication. Such awarenesses have changed the framework in which people view the world and are part of the reason that the final decades of
the 20th century and the opening decade of the 21st will always be thought of as the "Information Age." Compared to how information traveled throughout history to this point
the change has been truly remarkable. In less than forty years, all modern communications formats have changed in truly remarkable ways. What has not changed is the fact
that the people of different cultures interpret the information in very different ways. The end result is that there is often a measure of confusion about what a message is
truly meant to convey. Business serves as one of the most obvious examples. An international company with offices in the United States, Japan, and Brazil will clearly face numerous challenges
in how employees in L.A. understand a certain message compared to how the employees in Kyoto or Rio de Janeiro understand it. They may all rely on email, fax transmission,
and other forms of immediate and electronic communication but they are still steeped in the Japanese, American or Brazilian translation of the communication. Such translation goes far beyond relatively simple
or obvious language barriers and moves into the realms of social mores, cultural patterns and beliefs, and political, social, and religious ideals. Without a clear understanding of such differences, any
