suggested that we know when leadership is lacking and we know when a person is an effective leader but we really dont know why. It is like hearing a remarkable
musical performer or actor or anything else, we are emotionally moved by the performance but we cannot explain or describe why. We might even be brought to tears by the
magnificence of a performance but we have no words to explain why. Effective leadership is the same kind of construct. And, as we all know, constructs, for the most part,
cannot be described adequately. Beyond the difficulty with defining any construct, there are empirical facts. There is no universal single definition of leadership. The ongoing history and discussion of
the topic is evidence of the lack of a common definition or description. The construct of effective leadership means different things to different people. For some, an effective leader is
one who achieves the desired results, such as increasing a companys revenue. For others, an effective leader is one who makes them feel good or inspires them to perform better.
For still others, an effective leader is one who can bring people together for a common goal. Numerous leadership theories have emerged over more than a century. Just a
few of the many theories will be discussed here. The theories describe how an individual can use the inherent strategies to become a more effective leader. Burns Analysis of
Leadership One of Burns greatest contributions was to distinguish between transactional and transformational leadership, which are discussed later in this essay. He explained moral, transaction and transformational leaders. The moral
