This is not to say that people in history were not worried about what would happen to society with the growth of their particular technology, such as seen during the Industrial Revolution, but technology today truly begins to make life very impersonal in many ways. As a result people speculate, study, research, and even write literature in order to come to terms, somehow, with the growth of technology. The following paper examines how William Gibson presents individuals from the future, people hooked, so to speak, within cyberspace. The Future and Burning Chrome First and foremost, the student should understand that this writer is not taking a position as a time traveler, but rather presenting information that the student can use in their own unique time traveler perspective. The paper will discuss Gibsons work and other articles in a manner that speaks of how we, as a race, may be in the future. One story that many people are quite familiar with from "Burning Chrome" is Johnny Pneumonic. In this story we see that the future is perhaps filled with criminals, almost uneducated inner city reflections of the future. We imagine them to be typical gruff criminals but at the same time they are clearly educated, for most people are in the future, and they just live a life that is filled with criminal activity. It is the norm and technology makes crime an incredibly complex and very impersonal reality. Throughout this story we see how people in the future are cold and generally unfeeling. Even with the threat of death hanging over Johnnys head he and the other characters demonstrate an almost machine like coldness of uncaring.
