organized; the process of selecting targets; absence or presence of guilt; and the role of substance abuse in burglary. All of the men indicated that they committed their first burglary
when they were young; two were adolescents, and one was in his early twenties. In each case, they were in the company of others and peer pressure played a role
in their motivation. They all went on to commit burglaries on a regular basis, but only the first man appears to define himself primarily as a professional burglar, as the
other two look on themselves as "hustlers," and engage in other illegal activities, such as shoplifting and drug dealing in order to support themselves and their heroin addiction, which is
a feature common to all three men. There are similarities and differences in the manner in which each man conducts a burglary. The first man is far more thorough
in planning than the other two, as he carefully chooses a target house, using leads, which he pays for from informant, as to which homes have valuable items worth stealing.
He watches the home, noting schedules of the inhabitants, for several days prior to the burglary, and he works alone as he feels this is safer and he does not
have to share the proceeds with anyone. The first man generally enters through a garage door. The second man, however, indicated that it does not take him long to
plan a burglary, as he and his colleague generally plan as they go. Sometimes, they chisel a door with a screwdriver or they may break out a window or go
in through the basement, using whatever entry method seems easiest. The third man, like the second, indicated that his preferred method of entry was to use a screwdriver to gain
