Virtually all of Eastern Europe was under communist rule until the closing years of the 20th century. Poland and the Czech Republic have received a great deal of positive
attention over the past fifteen years, as has - to a lesser extent - Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. The entire world watched the strife in the area of Bosnia
in the mid-1990s. Today, the area is comprised of relatively like-minded individuals who are citizens of their respective countries and loyal to them,
but also eager to join the European Union (EU). Most of the larger of the Baltic states already have acceded to the EU; others strive to meet economic requirements
for membership. The juncture of history and future in the Baltic region provides a wealth of opportunity for environmentalists to wring their collective
hands over conditions that do and could exist. Years of operation under command economies in which there was no regard for environmental effects of business left in their wake
areas of broad pollution of air, soil and water. Now the Baltic nations are ripe for business growth in their various market economies, which can place even greater pressure
on the local environment as well as that of Europe in general. One highly positive feature of emerging business in the entire Baltic
region is its aspiration to EU membership and the EUs dedication to promoting sustainable development (SD). Several nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are involved in the Baltic region; likely the one
