More often than not, children who bully have been bullied in childhood or have problematic issues related to self-esteem that can impact how they perceive others (Gilbert & Procter, 2006). Bullying is problematic because children often do not understand how their statements and actions impact other people. It is not uncommon for children as a part of their interactions with friends to use racist or sexist jokes and negative language, which can be damaging to self-esteem. Bullying has extended from these types of derogatory interactions and the application of power, control or violence as a means of either responding to these negative comments or in supporting them (Mishna, 2008). Some of the more effective strategies for addressing bullying occur in the educational setting, and focus on group therapeutic approaches to creating empathy and reducing negativity. Group therapeutic approaches can enhance understanding of diversity, reduce derogatory language, and show students the impacts of bullying on their victims. Turning the tables, for example, is one method commonly used to support anti-bullying messages, and has been used in groups of bullies and bystanders, those who did not respond or help the victims in the presence of bullying activities (Young, 1998). It is not uncommon for schools to take a crisis intervention approach to bullying, rather than assessing the underlying features or applying psychotherapeutic approaches. As a result, therapists and school counselors might consider the value of introducing group approaches to addressing the problem of bullying, rather than developing interventions that are punitive and reflect the crisis focus.
