works that causes contention in the world of literary critics (Gurevich, 2002). It is clearly filled with historical prose, phantasmagoria and satire and it is also filled with allusions and
parallels that almost mandate analysis (Gurevich, 2002). Literary critics, however, cannot agree on an interpretation of the work (Gurevich, 2002). One critic suggested that with Master and Margarita,
it seems that Bulgakov was trying to write a text that would offend the authorities as much as possible (Anonymous, n.d.). This novel is, in fact, a satirical attack on
the Soviet state under Stalin and it also makes fun of various bodies and groups in the Soviet Union and of how so many simply disappeared into gulags and mental
institutions (Anonymous, n.d.). The fantastical side of the novel is the devil coming to Moscow, delivering a magic shows and somehow the entire thing is linked to Jesus execution by
the Romans (Anonymous, n.d.). The book certainly would not have been accepted in the atheist state of the Soviet Union (Anonymous, n.d.). Bulgakov even includes this rejection in the book
with the reaction of the authorities when one of the characters in the novel writes about the execution (Anonymous, n.d.). This is a book that does not present the reader
with a definite plot to follow along (Anonymous, n.d.). We can see the links with some of the text, though. For instance, Professor Woland, a black magician who shows up
with a strange bevy of companions, like a large cat who walks on hind legs and speaks the language, and generously gives gifts to people but the gifts mysteriously disappear.
