The following paper provides an overview of Buffalo soldiers. Buffalo Soldiers It was in 1866 that the all black troops were first formed. There was a total of six
regiments with two being cavalry and four being infantry. "These troops went on to play a major role in the history of the West, as the Buffalo Soldiers" (The Buffalo
Soldiers, 2005). The name Buffalo soldiers was given to the black by the Native Americans. One author notes that, it was the Plains Indians who gave them the name, a
name that the black men took to quite readily as being given the name of the Natives precious sacred animal was truly considered to be a sign of respect, something
these African Americans clung to understandably (The Buffalo Soldiers, 2005). The duty of the Buffalo soldiers involved the frontier at the time, and did not necessarily involve the East coast.
They worked from Montana to Texas building roads and forts, laying down telegraph lines, protecting cattle drives, railroad crews, stages and trains and settlers from the native warriors (The Buffalo
Soldiers, 2005). During the years 1875 and 1876, "the 9th Cavalry Regiment was transferred to the New Mexico District, under command of Colonel Edward Hatch" where they "participated in
campaigns against Victorio, Geronimo, and Nana" (The Buffalo Soldiers, 2005). In 1877 there was one particular Buffalo soldier who gained great recognition. There was a scouting party that was being
