This non-profit was established in 1964 for the purpose of helping "low-income income and homeless residents dealing with HIV/AIDS and related problems" (Dorell and Evans, 2009, p. 4E). Budget cuts threaten this organizations very life. In fact, the Director, Peggy Bush, reported that she was trying to establish a barbecue catering business with all profits going directly to Vita Life to keep it open and operating (Dorell and Evans, 2009). Vita Life provides different services for more than 400 people (Dorell and Evans, 2009). If they lose their funding, those people will not receive essential services needed for basic survival (Dorell and Evans, 2009). It is worse than that because the hundreds they would have helped in future years will not receive services. The Center for Non-Profits in New Jersey conducted a survey in February 2009 to determine how non-profits were doing. The results could no doubt be duplicated in any state: 70 percent said demand for services has increased substantially while funding has decreased; 89 percent reported funding changes between 2008 and 2009 with decreases expected in corporate and individual donations as well as government funding (Center for Non-Profits, 2009). As a result, at least one-third expected to decrease services, including eliminating programs and laying off staff (Center for Non-Profits, 2009). There is a domino effect for these agencies. They lay off workers, which puts more workers on unemployment benefits, and leaves those individuals unable to pay their bills.
