life, Buddhism incorporates a variety of different traditions, beliefs and practices. The religion is largely based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, who lived between the 6th and 4th centuries
BCE in modern-day Nepal. Through his teaching, Siddhartha later became known as the Buddha when he had what is known as an awakening. This awakening is considered the cornerstone of
Buddhism. The basic foundation of the religion is to understand the Four Noble Truths. They are the essence of Buddhas teachings and they basically state: 1. Life ultimately leads to
suffering in one way or another. 2. Suffering is caused by craving or the desire to attain material things. 3. Suffering ends when craving ends. This is achieved through Enlightenment
and a told dissolution of self. 4. Reaching this liberated state is achieved by following The Noble Eightfold Path. By following this path, one can achieve nirvana, which is ultimately
an end to suffering (Fundamental Buddhism, 2006). The path is basically a practical guide to ethics that practitioners study and think about through meditation. In fact, meditation, according to most
Buddhists, is the avenue that allows practitioners to reach a certain self-understanding and an interconnectedness that unites all living organisms (Burns, 2010). Therefore, the overall goal of Buddhism is a
