one of the most widely spread religions in the world. It is perhaps unlike many other religions for it teaches a way of living and looking at life rather than
teaching a particular historical perspective based on a figure that is considered God. Buddhism is a religion that has taken off in the United States and stands as the 4th
leading religion in the nation. The following paper examines this religion from a western perspective, as it is taking hold in the United States. Buddhism in the United
States One author illustrates, in relationship to the popularity of this religion in the United States, how, "For the last 18 years, all
denominations of the Buddhist religion have experienced an unparalleled growth in the United States of America. From the years 1990 to 2001, Buddhism had grown 170%" (Lewis, 2008). It is
a religion that, as mentioned, is not based on praising, adoring, following God or a particular Supreme Being, but a religion that is focused on living in the best way
possible. Lewis (2008) indicates that it is a religion whose message is one of "compassion, tolerance and rationality, in which personal
experience and spiritual transformation overrides traditional western religious fear and blind faith in ancient dogma and Christian mythology." As such it appeals to many Americans for a variety of reasons.
