There is a common theme in many of the major events which have shaped the world. That
theme, unfortunately, is the violence that results when one people of one culture attempt to control and shape those of another culture. Religion, it seems, is often pointed to
as one of the primary causative factors in such conflicts. Some have contended that in order to bring the worlds violence into control we must strive to unify under
one philosophical and theological front. Religious identification, however, is one of the most important aspects of a culture. Gopin (2002) observes:
"it is simply intellectually dishonest and shortsighted to try and repress from memory the prosocial fabric of religion and culture"
Indeed, religion should be viewed as a means through which violence can be abated rather than as
solely a causative factor in that violence. Religions across the board teach to one degree or another the importance of self-sacrifice, tolerance, and forgiveness. Indeed, many religions have
a history of instilling peace in not-so-peaceful times. Buddhism is particularly interesting in regard to how it might play an role
in addressing the violence that characterizes todays world. Buddhism is in many ways one of the most complex of the worlds religions. It, like all of the worlds
