radically different in their precepts and teachings. In reality, however, there are more similarities than dissimilarities. One of these similarities is a common goal, a goal of a
greater human purpose and ethics of being. Through belief in religion individuals are given both explanation and goals by which they can gauge their lives and those of others.
Religion gives ultimate purpose (Haarsma, 1996). Whether the beliefs of a particular religion revolve around an almighty Creator or simply a set of rules and goals, religion
gives much-needed structure (Haarsma, 1996; Snell, 1997). Religion also provides order, intricacy, and ultimate purpose (Haarsma, 1996). Religion is not always clear-cut, however, in regard to individual beliefs.
That presents difficulties for some individuals that are in search of the right path but not sure which direction to take. In my particular case, for example, I
have a Christian background ( a Catholic background to be more specific) but over time have found myself repeatedly attracted to such eastern religions as Buddhism. This paper will
contrast Catholicism and Buddhism and trace the route I took in deciding which direction to proceed. Although there are definite directions provided in
the Bible as to the follies of splitting into separate religions and sects, modern Christianity is represented by hundreds of differences in belief. The Catholic Church in particular has
been a powerful force in much of the worlds religious focus. From the Middle Ages to the time of Reformation, religion was the driving force in philosophy and practically
