Conclusion Introduction Everyone who hates to wear seat belts while in a moving vehicle has heard and may tell stories of deaths that seat belts contributed to, rather than avoided. Certainly there are exceptions to every rule, and it is true that occasionally - and quite rarely - seat belts have contributed to some deaths in traffic accidents over the years. The overwhelming evidence, however, is that those who use seat belts as a matter of course are safer - and more likely to survive a crash - than those who do not. Some Evidence The National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA) reports that motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2002 were the leading cause of death at every age between 3 and 33 (2002 Top Causes of Death by Age Groups, 2003).
