get a day off, others cannot afford to do that because they will not be paid even if they are really very ill. In the article Buck Up, Sicko by
Shari Roan the author looks at the reality and problems with sick leave, or lack thereof. The following paper examines and analyzes this particular article. Buck Up, Sicko:
Sick Days at Work As mentioned, many Americans do not have the benefit of paid sick days. According to Roan (2008) "As many as 43% of American workers in private
industry dont have paid sick days, according to 2007 data from the federal government. If they call in sick, they lose their pay and sometimes, their jobs" (F1+). This is
clearly a problem, especially considering that the nation never knows when something like the swine flu will arrive and then make many other people ill, especially in a workplace which
is usually very confined. In essence, almost half of all Americans are not allowed to call in sick and still get paid, no matter how sick they are. And, if
they are fearful of losing their job they will likely be more inclined to go to work, and thus threaten the health of other workers. The article points out
that there are companies that take care of their employees and even seemingly congratulate them for being responsible. If they do not use all their sick leave in a year
that time could be put into their vacation time. Or they may get other incentives that are associated with taking care of themselves: "With more emphasis on preventive care as
