powerful man, an adaptable man, and man with his own unique vision and drive. Aside from his public persona, however, Bruce Lee is well known for his own philosophy as
well. While his philosophy clearly incorporated other philosophies and things he had learned, he combined them to make his own unique philosophy that people study today. The following paper examines
the philosophy of Bruce Lee. Bruce Lees Philosophy At the very foundation of Lees philosophy lay many different ideals. Much of
his philosophy involved the self and how self-knowledge and self-improvement and self-perfection could lead to a better existence. He believed that to do these things one must see the world,
life in general, and put things into perspective (Little, 1996). He believed that there was a balance to life, such as seen in the theories of yin and yang, and
he believed that a person should adapt themselves to situations in order to overcome adversity (Little, 1996). And, he believed that one should tap into their own spiritual forces (Little,
1996). In respect to his following of the theories of yin and yang one can see the balance described by another author
who indicates that Lee possessed "Philosophical notions of action and inaction, self and not-self, voidness and wholeness, spontaneity and concentration, simplicity and ornamentation" (Glenn, 2001).
In further understanding some of his philosophy it is perhaps important to realize that he actually majored in philosophy when he attended the University of Washington (Olson,
2002). "A man who devoured books on a wide range of subjects, from Eastern philosophy to gung fu to psychotherapy, he yearned for knowledge. As he put it, he wanted
